Plastic waste recycling has been proposed as a long-term solution to eliminate land and marine deposit. This study proposed a new approach to fabricate biocomposites of nano-sized fillers and low matrix compositions with a great performance by using plastic packaging waste different from the conventional biocomposite. Coconut shell, an agricultural waste, wasbonded with waste plastic to form a biocomposite with a coupling agent. The optimum percentage composition and the effect of coconut shell ball milling time on the properties of the biocomposite were studied with density, thickness swelling, porosity flexural strength, flexural modulus, compressive strength, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results showed that the optimum performance of biocomposite was obtained at 30/70 (wt.%) plastic waste to coconut shell ratio, where 70 wt.% was the highest coconut shell composition that can be achieved. Furthermore, for 30 wt.% of polypropylene (low matrix), the performance of biocomposite improved significantly with milling time due to enhanced interaction between filler and matrix. As the milling time was increased from 0 to 40 h, the density increased from 0.9 to 1.02 g/cm3; thickness swelling decreased from 3.4 to 1.8%; porosity decreased from 7.0 to 3.0%; flexural strength increased from 8.19 to 12.26 MPa; flexural modulus increased from 1.67 to 2.87 GPa, and compressive strength increased from 16.00 to 27.20 MPa. The degradation temperature of biocomposite also increased as the milling duration increased from 0 to 40 h. The melting temperature increased significantly from 160 to 170 °C as the milling duration increased from 0 to 40 h. The depolymerisation occurred at 350 °C, which also increased with milling duration. This study revealed that the performance of biocomposite improved significantly with a lower percentage matrix and fillernanoparticle rather than increasing the percentage of the matrix. The nanocomposite can be used as a panelboard in industrial applications.

In this study, it was aimed to recycle waste polystyrene (PS) and obtain a material with high screw retention resistance that can be used instead of wood material. For this purpose, waste MDF dust (MF) and glass fiber (GF) were used as fillers in the PS matrix. Waste PS was first dissolved in gasoline and then 50-100-150 % fillers were added and mixed manually. To solidify the mixture, it was kept in the oven at 100 degrees for 30 minutes. Additionally, the samples were subjected to heat treatment by keeping them in the oven at 190 degrees for 30 minutes. Thus, the effect of heat treatment on the samples was also examined. The samples were kept in water for 2 hours and 24 hours and their thickness swelling (TS) and water absorption (WA) were determined. For mechanical characterization, the screw withdrawal resistances (SR) of the samples were analyzed. The results were analyzed using the SPSS package program. According to the obtained results, it was determined that there was no significant change in the amount of TS as the MF was increased, but the amount of WA has increased. It was determined that GF filling swelled less than MF. But WA was more than MF. Apart from the addition of 150 % GF, fillers increased the densities. SR resistance increased with the addition of filler. While heat treatment did not change the physical properties of the samples significantly, it increased the SR resistance. As a result, waste PS can be recycled into a material with high SR by adding waste MF and GF and can be used instead of wood material.

The search for green composite for sound-absorbing material has increased a significant interest. In this study, polystyrene (PS) composite foam filled with primary sludge and boiler ash from pulp mill was produced. The product was characterized using analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, and DSC, while the mechanical properties and sound-absorbing coefficient were analyzed regarding ASTM D 2240 and ASTM E-1050-98, respectively. The results showed that the sludge has 1β crystalline polymorph cellulose from the pulp. The chemical reaction can be seen by the chemical bond formed during the mixing process. The peak expansion occurred at 1600.44 cm-1 indicating the presence of a C=C functional group of maleic anhydride with polymer and filler. SEM images showed that the filler was distributed and dispersed into the polymer matrix and no agglomeration was produced. The sound-absorbing composites had complied ISO 11654:1997 regarding the sound absorption coefficient rating level on materials for rooms with sound absorption classes D and C with the value of α 0.328-0.793.
