Characteristics of Engineering Citations

Abstract: Broad-based citation studies in engineering have been done infrequently over the years, with most such studies being performed in specific engineering disciplines. A current snapshot of the materials being cited in a wide cross section of engineering is presented in this paper. The study involved analyzing nearly 5000 citations takcn from a rcprcsentative selection of scholarly journals. The data can be viewed as a benchmark as to the types of materials currently being used by a wide range of engineers engaged… Show more

“…The peak may be attributed to the period of gestation from the actual time a study is published until it reaches the public's attention and researcher's awareness of its relevance. The decline seems to adhere to the observation that different formats retain their research value for varying lengths of time, with books being cited longer after their publication dates than journals (Musser & Conkling, 1996).…”

“…Numerous citation analyses of science and engineering publications have been conducted, but few analyses have specifically mentioned standards in the results. Curtis (2011), Musser & Conkling (1996), and Zhang (2018) are some of the few citation analyses focusing on journal literature that specifically reported on standards cited. The results from these studies reveal a common thread.…”
