“…Inubushi et al (1999) reported an increase in N 2 O emission by NaCl amendment of soil (0.1 or 0.2 M) when the soil samples were incubated at 65% of the maximum water-holding capacity (MWHC) at 30°C for 1 month. Azam and Müller (2003) also found the stimulation of N 2 O emission by NaCl amendment of soil (0.3 or 0.6 mg g − 1 ) when the soil samples were incubated at 89% of MWHC and at 25°C for 50 h. Although the mechanism in the latter two cases was not discussed in their papers, ionic stress for denitrifying communities similar to those reported for nitrifying communities (NO 2 − production: Hatayama et al, 1999; NO 3 − production: eg. Sindhu and Cornfield, 1967;Yanai et al, 2004) could have taken place.…”

“…The effects of various media and their ammonium salt and nitrite concentrations on the growth of both strains were examined and compared with the effects on other strains. Nitrite production by strain PJA 1 was significant in the HEPES-medium, but low in the P-or PM-medium (Hatayama et al 1999) presumably due to inhibition by the high phosphate concentration in the latter.
