Characteristics of a Dengue Outbreak in a Remote Pacific Island Chain – Republic of the Marshall Islands, 2011–2012

Abstract: Dengue is a potentially fatal acute febrile illness caused by four mosquito-transmitted dengue viruses (DENV-1–4). Although dengue outbreaks regularly occur in many regions of the Pacific, little is known about dengue in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). To better understand dengue in RMI, we investigated an explosive outbreak that began in October 2011. Suspected cases were reported to the Ministry of Health, serum specimens were tested with a dengue rapid diagnostic test (RDT), and confirmatory tes… Show more

“…albopictus mosquito vectors has also extended to many Pacific regions and facilitated several DENV, CHIKV and ZIKV outbreaks. 23 , 24 , 28 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 Concomitantly, several countries have experienced a dramatic increase in the frequency and magnitude of epidemic dengue in the last few decades. 55 While case number trends have varied in north Queensland, Australia, the number of dengue outbreaks occurring between 2000 and 2016 has increased.…”

“…For instance, in various islands of the south pacific, A. polynesiensis —a primary vector of Wuchereria bancrofti —has also been identified as an endemic dengue vector [29]. Aedes scutellaris , a native species of Papua New Guinea, has also been linked to dengue outbreaks around the region and other pacific islands [30,31]. Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus of African and Asian origins, respectively, are globally known for their invasive nature and role in transmitting viruses that cause chikungunya, dengue fever, yellow fever, Zika, and encephalitis [32].…”

“…Large dengue outbreaks can place a substantial public health burden on island populations ( Fagbami et al, 1995 ; Sharp et al, 2014 ). However, understanding the dynamics of infection and evaluating the impact of vector control measures remains challenging.…”
