Characteristics and mortality determinants of COVID-19 patients undergoing hemodialysis

Abstract: Background/aim: COVID-19 infection which started in Wuhan City, China in December 2019 turned into a pandemic in a very short time, affecting mainly the elderly and those with serious chronic illnesses. COVID-19 infection has been observed with a high mortality rate especially in patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis. Materials and methods: Forty-two patients over 18 years of age, who underwent a maintenance haemodialysis program at our unit, and being tested positive for COVID-19 by PCR from nasophary… Show more

“…This is aligned with the French study from the Paris region that found an association between a CRP >175 mg/L and higher mortality [14]. This also concurs well with two studies one from Wuhan, China, and a second one from Turkey that identi ed a high CRP as predictor for higher mortality [28,29]. These studies found as well the low neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio as a predictor for death [28]; this was not con rmed in our patients.…”

“…In a Spanish caseseries, 77% of patients had fever (33% pneumonia), these results are similar in our population [30]. However, in one Turkish and one Chinese series, fever was found in 30% and 51.9% of 42 and 131 cases respectively [28,13]. Surprisingly, the Turkish patients had more cough and dyspnea than other populations although they had no difference in demographic factors.…”

“…Although Qatar has one of the lowest COVID-19-related mortality rates in the world (0.15%), the mortality rate among our dialysis patients was significantly higher (14.5%). Still, this remains lower than most international figures reported in Spain, Italy, and Turkey (Mortality rate of 30.4%, 40% and 13% respectively) [22][23][24].…”

“…We cannot explain this increase for the term "amyloidosis." However, various studies have reported that the incidence of AKI in patients with COVID-19 is between 3 and 15% and this is associated with increased mortality (Zhou et al 2020;Sİpahİ et al 2020;Adapa et al 2020;Öztürk et al 2021). Also, AKI rates are 14.5-50% in patients with severe COVID-19 infection in the intensive care unit (Zhou et al 2020;Sİpahİ et al 2020;Adapa et al 2020;Öztürk et al 2021;Dirim et al 2021).…”
