Characteristics and hybridization of important intermountain shrubs. III, Sunflower family

Abstract: Shrubs of the sunflower family are among the most common and important plants of the Intermountain area. In many valley, foothill, and mountain locations, composite shrubs, especially the sagebrushes and rabbitbrushes, provide the principal vegetation. These shrubs are invaluable as ground cover on natural and disturbed landscapes, as forage for wild and domestic herbivores, and as habitat for smaller creatures. The authors discuss and review vegetative, floral, and reproductive characteristics, hybridization,… Show more

“…Enough variation seems to exist that a selection program could result in the development of superior forms of rubber rabbitbrush to be used as a winter forage. This report with its documentation of variation in nutritive quality in rubber rabbitbrush augments earlier documentation of variation in browsing animal preference (Hanks et al 1975, McArthur et al 1979, rubber and resin content (Hegerhorst et al 1987), and seed germination (McArthur et al 1987).…”

“…Subspecies were identified by morphological criteria (Beetle and Young 1965;Winward and Tisdale 1977;McArthur et al 1979), and chemical criteria (Stevens and McArthur 1974). Within each accession, five plants were selected at random.…”

“…As moisture increases Wyoming big sagebrush gives way to basin big sagebrush and basin big sagebrush subsequently gives way to mountain big sagebrush; as elevation increases basin big sagebrush gives way to Wyoming big sagebrush which in turn gives way to mountain big sagebrush. In some situations, there is introgression and hybridization between the subspecies as well as other sagebrush taxa (McArthur et al 1979, 1988b, McArthur 1994. Since Euro-American settlement, big sagebrush populations have expanded and thickened in some areas within their broad original geographic range in response to some activities, e.g., livestock grazing.…”
