Characteristics and Analytical Methods of Mannitol: An Update

Abstract: Mannitol is an organic compound, a widely distributed natural sugar alcohol in nature. It is found in various plant species and produced by many microorganisms. Mannitol is about 50% as sweet as sucrose, has a low glycaemic index and inert nature, making it suitable to be used in many food products. Mannitol is an osmotic diuretic administering through the iv route and having many clinical usages and is one of the well-known excipients in many different types of formulations. This is also used to increase the … Show more

“…Several analytical methods have been reported for the determination of D-mannitol, including GC [15][16][17], high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-PAD) [18,19], HPLC-ELSD [20], and LC-MS/MS [21][22][23]. HPLC-ELSD was used to determine the main component and the organic impurities of D-mannitol in the work.…”

“…The interpretation of data of analytical data is important to study the pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and bioequivalence of any drug in drug development. Analytical methods provide justification of acceptable formulation of any drug [29,30]. The valid analytical strategies are crucial before the release of formulations and, therefore, should be periodically modified and improved with change in matrix, technology, and scope of analysis [31].…”
