Characteristic Cytokine Generation Patterns in Cancer Cells and Infiltrating Lymphocytes in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas and the Influence of Chemoradiation Combined with Immunotherapy on These Patterns

Abstract: Objectives: Cytokines produced by tumor cells and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) appear to regulate tumor cell growth and the cytotoxic activity of TIL. The objectives of the present study were to investigate cytokine generation patterns in tumor cells and TIL and to examine the influence of cancer therapy on this cytokine production and the cytotoxic activity of TIL. Methods: We determined the levels of cytokines produced by tumor cells and TIL in vitro and measured the cytotoxic activity of TIL against… Show more

“…[21] Cytokines and chemokines within tumors can contribute to the progression of tumors to a more aggressive metastatic phenotype or play a role in tumor therapy. [1722] IL-6 is most often classified as a proinflammatory cytokine, although IL-6 and IL-6 -regulated acute phase proteins were previously suggested as anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive, and may negatively regulate the acute -phase response 23…”

“…In this experiment, TNF-a, a well-known accelerator of tumor invasion, was used. TNF-a has been reported to show an increased expression in OSCC specimens 27 and promote S2 cleavage (resulting in NICD Notch1 in oral squamous cell carcinoma R Yoshida et al production) via TACE maturation in Notch signaling. [28][29][30] As shown in Figure 5, NICD cleavages were observed in a TNF-a concentration-dependent manner.…”

“…Such integrative approaches include detection of breathprint by electronic nose or integrated analysis of wide range of VOCs detected by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry or related methods [77][78][79]. Apart from VOCs, tumor cells produce wide range of cytokines like IL-4, IL-6, IL-11, IL-15, TNF-a, TGF-b, and others, which activate body's immune system and change the metabolism of wide range of body cells [80,81].…”
