Characterising the allergic profile of children with cystic fibrosis

Abstract: Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition that affects multiple organ systems. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a wellrecognised problem but other allergic conditions are less well documented in CF.Objective: To characterise the allergic profile of a cohort of children with CF, with a focus on those with ABPA.Methods: A cohort of children with CF were interviewed and retrospective data were collected regarding their allergic histories and other relevant clinical features. “…The exact reason for this association between EoE, CF and atopic diseases is unclear but altered esophageal microbiome, dysregulated interactions between microbiota and gut mucosal immunity, could be a potential link between these conditions [ 12 13 14 15 16 17 ]. Similarly, prolonged antibiotic exposure in CF patients could predispose to atopic disorders via Th2 skewing [ 18 19 ].…”

“…There are studies showing an increase in allergic response to Af in some pwCF who do not meet diagnostic criteria for ABPA [ 74 ]. While many of these investigations were conducted some time ago on earlier birth cohorts, pwCF were generally found to have more frequent IgE-positive allergy testing to various allergens including that of Af [ 75 , 76 , 77 ]. This was seen to increase with age and associated with symptoms consistent with asthma and other atopic conditions [ 36 , 78 ].…”
