Characterisation of Natural and HDTMA-Br Modified Dijah-Monkin Bentonite Clay: FTIR, XRF, XRD and SEM

Abstract: In this study, Dijah-Monkin bentonite clay was modified with a cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br) at the level of twice the cation exchange capacity (CEC). This process results in the development of hydrophobic organoclay with an improved adsorption capacity. The clay obtained from Zing LGA Taraba State, North-East Nigeria, was beneficiated and pulverised to a particle size of 125 µm. The modification was performed without acid activation to prevent damages to the clay’s crystal … Show more

“…As shown in Figure 1, kaolinite has four absorption bonds in the OH stretching region: two strong bands at 3694 and 3620 cm −1 and two weak peaks at 3669 and 3647 cm −1 [56]. The same results were obtained by Soriano-Disla et al [57], Aleksashkin et al [54], And Oloyede et al [69]. One more absorption band at 914 cm −1 is an Al 2 OH bending vibration and is also characterized by kaolinite [54,56].…”

“…The application of bentonite clay in the ceramic membrane fabrication has also gained attention due to its unique properties, such as its ability to swell when in contact with water, low firing temperature, ion exchange capability, and good thixotropy. [96][97][98][99] Its chemical composition shows variability, with SiO 2 content ranging from 52 to 71 wt.% and Al 2 O 3 content ranging from 13 to 22 wt.%. Raji et al 100 used magnesium bentonite for oilin-water emulsion separation, achieving high permeate flux stability and oil rejection.…”
