Monolithic components are often insufficient when a combination of conflicting properties, or a variation in properties at different regions within a material is required. Functionally graded composite materials (FGCM) are a relatively new class of materials with a systematic variation of the composition, microstructure, and properties along one direction. The graded structure offers tailorable property combinations not achievable with monolithic composites and significant recent research has been carried out on their development. An effort has been made in this article to review the latest developments on bulk FGCMs since 2015. The different processing techniques used for their fabrication have been discussed, highlighting their advantages, limitations, and recent advancements pertaining to FGCM fabrication. Various physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of FGCMs have been treated separately, and wherever possible, summary plots combining data from various research articles have been developed. Finally, potential areas for directing future FGCM research have been identified.

The characteristics of composite materials can be enhanced by using it as functionally graded composites (FGM). In this work, four-layer FGMs are produced by using aluminum, silicon carbide, and magnesium peroxide. The entire fabrication process has been performed through the sintering process, in which, the powder methodology is used to blend the particles of each material. During the fabrication of FGM, three parameters such as sintering time, sintering temperature and compacting pressure are considered. Four layers of the FGM are formulated as 100% of pure aluminum, 90%Al+ 10%SiC, 90%Al + 5%SiC+5%MgO 2 , and 85%Al + 5%SiC+10%MgO 2 respectively. The created FGMs have been analyzed to find out the mechanical, tribological and microstructural characteristics. The microstructure and worn-out surface of the FGM layers are analyzed via the scanning electron microscopy. In the mechanical analysis, the compressive strength and hardness characteristics of FGM material are investigated. The outcomes of the mechanical analysis are exhibited that the FGMs deliver the finest compressive strength,microhardness,and macro hardness as 315 Mpa, 1.26 Gpa,and 1.87 Gpa which are higher than the composite materials. Finally, Taguchi optimization has been performed to determine the optimum process parameters in terms of mechanical characteristics. The results of the Taguchi optimization exhibited that the mechanical characteristics of FGM are highly depending upon the sintering temperature and slightly on compacting pressure and sintering time.

Functional graded nanocomposites (FGNCs) based on Al are artificially tailored heterogeneous materials intended to serve the demand for diverse and contradicting properties used in various industrial applications. FGNCs and hybrid FGNCs (HFGNCs) based on Al reinforced with graphene and vanadium carbide (VC) were prepared using powder metallurgy techniques and investigated. Both samples were designed with a gradient composition, where the bottom layer consisted of 100% pure Al, followed by three consecutive layers containing progressively increasing amounts of reinforcement. The incorporation of graphene and VC into layer powders resulted in a decrease in both particle and crystal dimensions compared to pure Al. Adding graphene has a negative effect on bulk density samples, while VC has a positive effect. Reinforcing materials led to a decrease in thermal conductivity that reached 26.7 % for samples reinforced with VC reinforcement, except for FGNCs reinforced with graphene, which increased by ~3.3 compared to Al. The samples’ CTE and electrical conductivity values decreased, although adding graphene alone led to a slight decrease in electrical conductivity.
