Zur fünften Auflage wurde der Text komplett aktualisiert, insbes. die Entwicklungen im Bereich des elektronischen Marketings wurden dabei berücksichtigt. Das Grundkonzept aus der dritten Auflage wurde beibehalten. Das Buch ist für Praktiker im Marketing als Ratgeber geeignet und als Lehrbuch für Studierende des Marketings oder auch spezieller Studiengänge der Marketing-Kommunikation. Die Autoren bedanken sich für viele Hinweise zur Verbesserung, die von Studierenden in den Lehrveranstaltungen gegeben wurden. Augsburg und Immenstadt, im Frühjahr 2014 Wolfgang Fuchs und Fritz Unger Vorwort zur dritten Auflage Dieses Buch erscheint nunmehr in der 3. Auflage. Die erste Auflage hatte den Titel Werbemanagement. Schon damals (1989) wurde Werbung als Bestandteil in einem umfassenden Kommunikations-Mix verstanden, dieses wiederum als ein Element im Marketing-Mix. Seit der 2. Auflage gehen die Autoren weiter und behandeln von vornherein das Management der Marketing-Kommunikation in einem sehr umfassenden Sinne. Die Werbung selber als "klassisches" Kommunikationsinstrument hat kaum mehr an Bedeutung zugenommen. Andere Instrumente im Kommunikations-Mix haben erheblich gewonnen: Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Sponsoring, Event Marketing, u.Ä. werden zunehmend zu wichtigen Bestandteilen im Kommunikations-Mix. Erfolgreiches Kommunikations-Management setzt auch marketingstrategische Kompetenz voraus, ebenso wie Marketingstrategen über Kompetenz in Fragen menschlicher Beeinflussbarkeit verfügen müssen, wenn sie diese erfolgreich in ein Marketingkonzept integrieren wollen. In der bewussten Gestaltung von Schnittstellen zwischen Marketing und Kommunikation einerseits sowie der Wirkung verschiedener Kommunikationsinstrumente andererseits sehen wir einen Schlüssel für erfolgreiches Marketingmanagement. So ist das erste einleitende Kapitel der ganzheitlichen Unternehmens-und Marktkommunikation gewidmet. Die weiteren Kapitel sind in Form eines Entscheidungsprozesses aufgebaut.
