“…Further confirmation of improved cognition in the treated TgCRND8 mice was the reduction of synaptic toxicity illustrated by 146% increase in synaptophysin positive boutons and cell bodies in the hippocampus at 6 months of age (Fenili et al, 2010;McLaurin et al, 2006). scyllo-Inositol treatment reduced total Aβ40 (p < 0.001) and Aβ42 (p < 0.05) and decreased parenchymal plaque load throughout the brain (p < 0.05) (McLaurin et al, 2006).…”

“…Scyllitol is an osmolyte known to be present in the blood of teleosts and other deep-sea animals and which may function as a cryoprotectant (Yancey et al, 2002(Yancey et al, , 2004. It has also received significant interest for its role in brain chemistry across species from fish to mammals, and in particular for its potential as a therapeutic for Alzheimer's disease, likely related to its stabilization of and interaction with proteins (Fenili et al, 2010;Ma et al, 2012). The relevance of these increased sugar alcohol levels, particularly as related to prolonged starvation, warrants further study, as this may reflect an unknown metabolic or biochemical response to starvation that has not previously been characterized.…”

“…However, there is fairly little known about polyol levels in fish. The accumulated polyol scyllitol was first discovered in sharks and skates in 1858 by Staedler and Frerichs (Fenili et al, 2010;Ma et al, 2012). It is known that skates have the highest levels of scyllitol in their kidneys and livers.…”
