“…It fulfills many important metabolic functions and is endowed with several defense systems to ensure local blood flow and tissue integrity (for review, see Ciba Foundation Symposium, 1980). Release of prostacyclin by endothelial cells following attachment of cytotoxin may represent a line of defense in that prostacyclin counteracts several cytotoxin inflicted tissue damaging processes: in granulocytes Pseudomonas aeruginosa cytotoxin apparently stimulates the formation of leukotrienes (Bremm et al, 1983) which in turn increase the adhesiveness of other granulocytes and attract even more inflammatory cells (Hansson et al, 1983). Prostacyclin is known to lower the adhesiveness of granulocytes to the endothelium (Boxer et al, 1980) and may limit the phagocyte related vascular damage (Suttorp and Simon, 1982).…”
