Responding to calls to incorporate biodiversity matters into accounting research, we attempt to provide a balance by moving away from the conventional focus on the reporting of biodiversity impacts and activities by public and private sector organisations, by focusing on how non‐governmental organisations active in the conservation space (CNGOs), interact with the public sector. In particular, we confine our study to explaining how South African state‐owned enterprises (SOEs) and CNGOs active in South Africa, report on their collaboration engagements. To explain the engagements between SOEs and CNGOs, we use their publicly available reports (annual/integrated) to explore the extent which these entities interact and collaborate. However, although several CNGOs operate in South Africa, we documented little evidence of formalised engagements between these SOEs and CNGOs, with Eskom being the notable exception. Notwithstanding the observed scant formalised reporting on engagements, we suggest that the reporting of CNGOs engagements could be harnessed to indirectly serve as alternative credibility enhancing mechanisms. In this way, it could contribute by attesting to the veracity of organisational biodiversity disclosures, and may provide a basis to hold these organisations to account for their contribution to environmental conservation, or degradation. In this context, we conclude by calling for a research agenda to investigate the relationship between CNGOs and their funding organisations, irrespective of whether they operate in the public or private sectors, as well as the potential of CNGOs to serve as advocacy and activism agents, thereby improving organisational biodiversity accountability.

PurposeThis study aims to examine how integrated thinking principles can be used to assist those charged with governance during and after a crisis.Design/methodology/approachAn autoethnographic approach was used to collect and reflect on information related to the economic, social and environmental impact of COVID-19. This was complemented with a bibliometric analysis of academic articles including “corporate governance”, “integrated thinking” and “crisis” as a keyword. This information was used to produce a data mind map of core themes. This was supplemented with a qualitative exploratory approach based on semi-structured interviews with 16 participants comprising preparers of financial statements, board members and corporate governance specialists to obtain insights into using integrated thinking in corporate governance during a crisis.FindingsThe results of the study indicate that those charged with governance can use integrated thinking to repurpose their business model by considering a multi-capital and multi-stakeholder perspective to value creation. The study highlights the importance of implementing a holistic capital integration process to gauge risks, capitalise on opportunities and improve business processes in response to a crisis. This can be leveraged by both the private and public sectors to manage a crisis and deal with the long-term indirect impacts of a crisis.Social implicationsAn integrated thinking approach can be used by both the private and public sectors to bolster confidence, tackle pressing social and environmental challenges and contribute to improved performance relative to the sector.Originality/valueThe expert interviews contribute empirical evidence to the profile of mainstream social and environmental accounting literature and offer a practical contribution by offering insights that can directly be used by organisations’ investors, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to manage a crisis. This paper also advances the sustainability agenda by assessing how a crisis can be managed in the context of a developing economy and advancing normative recommendations which will be broadly applicable to an international audience.

The financial sector is characterized by complexity due to the management of a large volume of transactions, which can lead to the difficulty of considering, identifying, and monitoring them. The lack of mechanisms in monitoring and control transactions can contribute to the development of illegal practices within a company, such as fraud, corruption, bribery, and money laundering. These phenomena can affect financial institutions negatively. Therefore, the development of an appropriate corporate governance system can ensure to members of the board and executives in a company that any illegal practice can be detected. This study aims to highlight the factors that contribute to the development of illegal practices within European financial institutions. This can help executives to plan and mitigate the illicit practices that may emerge. For this purpose, a binary logit regression analysis on panel data from 2018 to 2020 was applied to 336 European financial companies. The findings of this research emphasize the crucial role of corporate governance in the prevention of the development of illicit issues within European financial institutions, while human resources can be characterized as a pathway to corruption. Both factors, corporate governance and human resources, are main pillars of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG), which indicates the need of the financial sector in Europe for the elaboration of anti-corruption strategies. Thus, companies within the sector can improve their ESG score.
