Changing epistemological beliefs: The unexpected impact of a short‐term intervention

Abstract: This study indicates the possibility of changing domain-specific epistemological beliefs through a short-term intervention. However, it questions the stability and elaborateness of domain-specific epistemological beliefs, particularly when domain knowledge is shallow.

“…There is a growing body of quasi-experimental and experimental research that demonstrates that interventions can have a positive impact on changing epistemic cognition (Gill, Ashton, & Algina, 2004;Kienhues, Bromme, & Stahl, 2008;Lunn Brownlee et al, 2016). Still, more research and diverse methods are needed to empirically identify the theory-of-change regarding when, how, and why epistemic cognition changes.…”

“…This result follows the same line as other previous works that likewise did not identify differences between university students in different years (Hakan & Munire, 2012;Jehng, Johnson, & Alexander, 1993). As suggested in some studies, the tuition received throughout a university degree course does not necessarily produce an epistemic change; for this to occur, it appears that specific instruction pursuing this aim is necessary (Kienhues, Bromme, & Stahl, 2008;Neely, 2014).…”

“…Kienhues, Bromme ve Stahl (2008), epistemolojik inançlarla ilgili tüm çalışmaların zaman içinde bu inançların basit olarak adlandırılan epistemolojik inançlardan karmaşık inançlara doğru değiştiğini belirtmiştir. Epistemolojik inançların özel araştırma konularından birisi de bilimsel epistemolojik inançlardır (BEİ).…”
