Changes of Serum Omentin Levels and Relationship between Omentin and Adiponectin Concentrations in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Serum omentin levels possibly play an important role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and diabetes. More importantly, there is such a close connection between serum omentin and adiponectin levels that regulation of omentin may be dependent on adiponectin.

“…Thus it is hardly surprising that circulating levels of www.intechopen.com omentin/intelectin are negatively correlated with the extent of carotid intima-media thickness (Shibata et al, 2011) since they are probably derived from the endothelial cells of the blood vessels. Female subjects have higher circulating levels of omentin than male subjects and those levels correlate with the circulating levels of adiponectin, both being negatively associated with insulin resistance (Yan et al, 2011). These findings confirm the original report by de Souza Batista et al, (2007) that circulating levels of omentin/intelectin are negatively correlated with BMI and insulin resistance.…”

“…However, decreased omentin mRNA expression levels were reported in patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity [23]. In two recent studies, serum omentin levels were lower in patients with type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose regulation than in the normal glucose tolerance group [24,25].…”

“…They showed that serum RBP4 levels were elevated in GLUT4 glucose transporter knockout mice and humans with obesity and type 2 diabetes [11]. Currently, increasing evidence denotes an association between increased circulating levels of RBP4 with type 2 diabetes mellitus and/or insulin resistance states [11,25,12,[26][27][28][29][30][31]. A pathophysiological link between RBP4 and type 2 diabetes mellitus may also arise from impaired insulin secretion [3].…”

“…Serum omentin-1 concentrations were reported to correlate passively with BMI and waist circumference [5] . Decreased serum level of omentin-1 was reported in polycystic ovary syndrome [6] , diabetes [7] and coronary artery disease [8] . Moreover, omentin was reported to prevent apoptosis of cardiomyoblasts via inhibition of mitochondrial ROS production [9] .…”
