Changes in toxicity during treatment of wastewater from oil plant contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons

Abstract: BACKGROUND Exploitation of oil‐fields always faces problems with management of petroleum‐contaminated wastewaters. Wastewater, severely contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons: total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH, 340.7 mg L−1), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX, 5.52 mg L−1), phenols (2.95 mg L−1), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH, 29.2 µg L−1), were pretreated on a flow‐line installation. The following processes were applied: flotation, coagulation with flocculation, sedimentation and filt… Show more

“…Low to moderate removal of VOCs, PAHs and phthalates during aerobic and anaerobic treatment of industrial wastewaters is reported by several authors. 67 , 115 117 Thus, 40% of the sum of PAHs present at initial concentrations of 15.2 μg/Lwere degraded in pilot-scale aerobic SBR treating petrochemical wastewater at long hydraulic retention time (HRT = 22 d.). 67 Two to three ring PAHs are more amenable to biodegradation under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions when compared to PAH with >3 rings.…”

“…Lu and Wei (2011) investigated treatment with zerovalent iron (20 g/L) and EDTA (150 mg/L) prior to studying biotreatability of produced water from a polymer flooded oilfield-45% COD removal was observed despite the presence of recalcitrant polymer hydrolyzed polyacrylamide. Coagulation-flocculation was used as a pretreatment in an aerobic batch test study with other pretreatments (flotation, sedimentation, and filtration), resulting in 91% TPH removal (Steliga et al 2015).…”
