Changes in the size of corpora allata, in the juvenile hormone III titer in the hemolymph, and in the protein content of terminal oocytes throughout the first gonadotropic cycle in Aiolopus thalassinus (Insecta: Orthoptera: Acrididae)

Abstract: In Aiolopus thalassinus (Fabr.), the changes i n thevolume of the corpora aiiata (CA), in the concentration of juvenile hormone Ill (JH Ill) in the hernolymph, and i n protein content i n the terminal (t) oocytes were studied during the first gonadotropic cycle. These parameters could be better related to the volume of t-oocytes than to age after emergence. TheJH Ill titer curve was maximum (2.9 pmol/lO pl) at an oocyte volume of 1.2 mm'. Before oviposition (days 10-1 6) the JH Ill titer decreased to 0.65 prno… Show more

“…For the most important pest species, their life cycle is well known (see Lecoq 1978, Duranton et al 1982, Gangwere et al 1997, but some remain largely unstudied despite their economic importance. This is the case for Eyprepocnemis plorans (Charpentier, 1825), which has been the subject of only rare studies (Jago 1963, Lecoq 1980, Hernández and Presa 1984, Olmo-Vidal 1990, Schmidt et al 1996.…”

“…Eyprepocnemis plorans -also called Clover or Berseem grasshopper -is widely distributed in Africa, southern Europe, and southwestern Asia, and consists of four geographic subspecies (Jago 1963, Dirsh 1965, Hernández and Presa 1984, Olmo-Vidal 1990, Schmidt et al 1996, Cigliano et al 2018. These include E. p. plorans (Charpentier, 1825), which occurs in the Mediterranean and western Asia, E. p. ornatipes (Walker, 1870), which is found in the Sahelian zone to northern Kenya and southern Arabia, E. p. meridionalis (Uvarov, 1921), which is distributed in east and southeastern Africa and E. p. ibandana Giglio-Tos, 1907, which occurs in west and central Africa (Dirsh 1965).…”

“…6). Such an asynchrony and a delay of several days between the maximal growth of the corpora allata and the peak of JH in the hemolymph was also observed in other insect species (Schmidt and Othman, 1993;Tawfik et al, 2000). Nevertheless, the elevation of JH titer prior to the presoldier molt occurs also in other termites (OkotKotber et al, 1993;Park and Raina, 2004).…”
