“…STs suffering considerable fitness cost upon developing high-level resistance to fluoroquinolones will be replaced by STs retaining much fitness even at high MIC values in "high fluoroquinoloneconsumption areas". In line with experimental results long dominant HA-MRSA clones, especially ST30, ST8, and ST239, have been losing ground to or have been completely replaced by CC5, ST228, and ST22 strains in adult hospital wards across various continents (Mato et al, 2004;Pérez-Roth et al, 2004;Velazquez-Meza et al, 2004;Ma et al, 2006;Amorim et al, 2007;Conceição et al, 2007;Aires-de-Sousa et al, 2008;Knight et al, 2012;Espadinha et al, 2013;Lim et al, 2013;Coombs et al, 2014;Abdulgader et al, 2015;Hsu et al, 2015;Lawes et al, 2015;Zarfel et al, 2016;Chamon et al, 2017;Nikolaras et al, 2018).…”

“…However, shifts may be occurring in the molecular epidemiology of S. aureus and MRSA among patients with bloodstream infections. As reported from a single-center surveillance in Greece, the widespread HA-MRSA clone ST239-III gradually decreased with the increase of the isolation frequency of these two CCs: HA-MRSA CC5, mostly belonging to ST5-II; and community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) CC80, mainly represented by ST80-IV-t044 19 . In this study, CC5-II MRSA was found in 34 isolates accounting for 91.9% (34/37) among CC5 MRSA isolates, suggesting that CC5 MRSA or CC5-II MRSA might be more frequent occurring among patients with MRSA BSIs in Shanghai.…”

“…The exact reasons for this specific decline among MRSA BSIs are not fully understood. However, in despite of these positive developments, S. aureus or MRSA still remains a priority for public health in Europe, with 10 of 30 countries reporting prevalence rates of MRSA > 25%, including Greece 19 .…”

“…Epidemiological studies of MRSA-ST80 PVL+ have revealed that these strains are primarily associated with recurrent, chronic, or particularly severe SSTIs, such as furuncles and abscesses [114]. This clone was also reported from other types of infections including fatal pneumonia and bloodstream infections [14,61,77,79]. In the study by Doudoulakakis et al, the authors reported that MRSA-ST80 PVL+ strains accounted for 95% of CA-MRSA pneumonia cases [14].…”

“…In the study by Doudoulakakis et al, the authors reported that MRSA-ST80 PVL+ strains accounted for 95% of CA-MRSA pneumonia cases [14]. Nikolaras et al showed that 8% of MRSA strains isolated from bloodstream infections were assigned to MRSA-ST80 clone [77]. In a collection of 94 MRSA-ST80 strains isolated in Lebanon and Jordan, 56% of these isolates were associated with SSTIs, 15% with respiratory tract infections, and 9% with bacteremia [115].…”
