Changes in the geographical distribution of youth poverty and social exclusion in EU member countries between 2008 and 2017

Abstract: With respect to the fulfillment of the objectives of the Europe 2020 strategy, the threat of poverty and social exclusion has not been sufficiently reduced in the European Union (EU) over the past decade, and large regional disparities persist. “…We agree with Ravallion ( 2011 ), who states that the goal of future efforts in poverty monitoring should be to create a set of more, reliable indices covering the poverty dimensions and not one multidimensional index. A weakness of the AROPE approach is also the fact that it does not consider the depth of the individual phenomena, which may distort the impact of dimensions on social exclusion, as pointed out in the case of young persons by Šoltés et al ( 2020 ). The paper follows the original AROPE concept, which is also used in the EU-SILC 2020 database, although the methodology for measuring SMD is not entirely appropriate.…”
