Changes in the forest ecosystems in areas impacted by aridization in south-western Romania

Abstract: BackgroundIn the past few decades, global climate change has accentuated the intensification of aridization in South-Western Romania, with direct and indirect consequences on the quality of forest ecosystems. In addition to qualitative deterioration, the quantitative changes brought about by intensive anthropic deforestation have created the conditions for a decline in the size of forest areas on vast tracts of land. The paper aims to analyze the qualitative and quantitative changes in the forest ecosystems in… Show more

“…The expected increase of drought is small in the Czech Republic and Austria, but substantial in Slovakia, Hungary [73] and Romania [74] with a clear acceleration in Southern Ukraine and Russia. A prediction of growth of forests in the West Carpathians by growth simulator SIBYLA and process-based model BIOME-BGC for 2012-2050 and 2071-2100 (used RCMs are based on Scenario A1B, warming from 3 to 4 • C, decreased summer precipitation at −10% and increased winter one at 10% by end of the 21st century) reported the expected substantial negative impact on growth of beech and Norway spruce, with substantial variation dependently on the elevation, particularly for the stands receding edge, but favorable conditions for oak [75].…”

“…This can be termed areal migration of the turnover, which comes from municipalities with small budgets (but rich in forest mass) and is transferred to other urbanized municipalities. The other important aspect is that the forest activities that have developed in forested municipalities do not provide added value to the woody resources (e.g., logging activities in contrast to furniture production, which produces more value and implies more qualified employees) [42][43][44].…”

“…In this eventuality, the following are worth mentioning: the forest ecosystems in northern Dobrogea, possibly degraded (Prăvălie and Bandoc, 2015), similarly to certain analysed cases in southern Romania, where withering was detected, against the background of decreasing precipitation and increasing temperatures in the warm season (Prăvălie et al, 2014c;Prăvălie et al, 2014a).…”
