Changes in the Accommodation-convergence Relationship after the Artisan Phakic Intraocular Lens Implantation for Myopic Patients

Abstract: PurposeTo evaluate the change of accommodation-convergence parameters after implantation of Artisan phakic intraocular lens (PIOL).MethodsProspective study for the patients with the Artisan PIOL implantation was performed. A total of 37 patients (3 males and 34 females) enrolled the study. Preoperatively, convergence amplitude, the stimulus accommodative convergence per unit of accommodation (AC/A) ratio and the near point of convergence (NPC) were evaluated. After the Artisan PIOL implantation, the identical … Show more

“…Ryu et al. () studied accommodation in myopic patients implanted with the Artisan iris‐fixated phakic IOL. Both the AC/A ratio and the convergence amplitude showed a transient increase during the first month after surgery, with them reverting to preoperative values three to six months later.…”

“…Fu et al (2013) found no changes in near point of convergence in a retrospective case-series study after ICL posterior-chamber pIOL implantation, whereas AC/A ratio was found to increase and the amplitude of accommodation improved after surgery. Ryu et al (2014) studied accommodation in myopic patients implanted with the Artisan iris-fixated phakic IOL. Both the AC/A ratio and the convergence amplitude showed a transient increase during the first month after surgery, with them reverting to preoperative values three to six months later.…”

“…The tendency for near convergence amplitude was to decrease slightly after surgery, but these changes have not been statistically significant for any group. Similarly, Ryu et al did not found statistically significant differences, but they reported a small increase in break and recovery points at one month after p-IOL implantation [ 26 ]. Differences in the tendency could be explained by the different method used to measure near convergence amplitude (bar prism vs. handheld rotary prism).…”

“…These results are in line with the outcomes reported by Chen et al and Luo et al [ 21 , 22 ]. On the other hand, Ryu et al revealed an increase of AC/A ratio during the one-month visit, but progressive stabilization was noted during follow-up periods [ 26 ].…”
