Changes in soil water holding capacity and water availability following vegetation restoration on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Abstract: Changes in land use type can lead to variations in soil water characteristics. The objective of this study was to identify the responses of soil water holding capacity (SWHC) and soil water availability (SWA) to land use type (grassland, shrubland and forestland). The soil water characteristic curve describes the relationship between gravimetric water content and soil suction. We measured the soil water characteristic parameters representing SWHC and SWA, which we derived from soil water characteristic curves,… Show more

“…Previous studies have shown that soil organic matter (SOM) is a key indicator of the sensitivity of soil to erodibility 19 , 20 , and that SOM influences surface runoff by improving soil infiltration rate and surface roughness 21 , 22 . The comprehensive role of soil organic matter in erosion is an external factor (slope and rain intensity)and the hydraulic parameters cannot be reflected.…”

“…14-20 évvel a parcellák létrehozása után megismételve a nedvesség tartalom vizsgálatokat, jelentős eltéréseket tapasztaltunk a kezelések talajainak összehasonlításakor (4. ábra). Ennek részben az lehetett az oka, hogy a NGY talajai elvesztették SOC készletük jelentős részét, ami csökkenti a talajok vízmegtartó képességét (ZHANG et al, 2021) (5. ábra). A 2020-as vizsgálatnál a DA-nál a 64%kal magasabb széntartalmat mértünk, mint a NGY-nél.…”

“…The more varied the vegetation planted, the higher the species diversity, which makes the ecosystem more stable. Besides that, vegetation greatly determines the ability of the soil to hold water [125]; therefore, it can prevent and control erosion. Focusing on maximizing the involvement of and benefits for communities, the main choices of forest plantation programs in Indonesia are social forestry and agroforestry in the state forest and on private land, respectively.…”
