Changes in Liver Tissue Trace Element Concentrations During Hepatitis B Viral Infection Treatment

Abstract: Approximately 350-400 million people in the world have Hbs Ag (hepatitis B virus surface antigen) positivity. In the international guidelines, the permanent suppression of replication in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection therapy is reported as the primary therapeutic goal. Trace elements play a key role in liver diseases. The aim of our study is to determine some trace element concentrations in the liver during HBV treatment periods. The measurement of 11 trace elements (manganese, lead, nickel, chromi… Show more

“…Several studies demonstrated a relationship between Pb exposure and susceptibility to viral infections, corroborating its role in suppression of antiviral immunity ( Rashed, 2011 ; Emokpae, Mbonu, 2018 ; Sahin et al, 2019 ), although no association between Pb and airborne viral infections exists.…”

“…4 Metabolic disorders characterize most liver diseases. Patients with CLD often have alterations in glucose, 5 trace elements, [6][7][8][9][10][11] lipid, 12 and protein metabolism. [13][14][15] The effects of liver diseases on amino acid (AA) metabolism have received widespread attention.…”

“…Thus, alteration in the homeostasis of these trace elements affects the development of liver disease, especially in patients with chronic HBV and HCV infections [21,35,36]. Trace elements are necessary in the treatment of viral hepatitis [34,37]. In our study, the serum Zn level was found to be decreased while the Cu level was increased.…”

“…Cu and Zn are trace elements necessary for body metabolism. They are vital enzyme components in cell metabolism and antioxidant defense systems [20,21,34]. Cu and Zn are members of a superoxide dismutase enzyme group (CuZnSOD), which catalyzes the superoxide anion dismutation into H 2 O 2 and oxygen.…”
