Changes in Lipid Content of Serum and of Liver Following Bilateral Renal Ablation or Ureteral Ligation

Abstract: Certain changes in the lipid content of the serum following bilateral nephrectomy or ureteral ligation have been noted (1, 2). The extent and character of these changes, the factors affecting them, and the associated changes in the composition of the liver form the subject of this paper. For comparative purposes the effects of unilateral nephrectomy, of splenectomy, of fasting, and of other procedures have also been studied.

“…The mech anisms underlying these abnormalities are not well understood. Increased production of triglyceride-rich hypoproteins by the liver, reduction in their removal by peripheral tissues, or a combination of both may be operative [44], An increase in blood lipids has also been reported in animals rendered uremic by bilateral nephrectomy or bilateral ureteral ligation [45][46][47]. Cantin studied the role of PTH in the hyperlipidemia of uremic rats [48], He showed that removal of the parathyroid glands partially inhibited the rise in blood lipids observed after bilateral nephrectomy.…”
