“…A similar trend has been reported in France where there was an increase in thyroid cancer incidence, mainly due to the papillary type, with an epidemic of microcarcinomas (43% of operated cancers, for the period 1998-2001) (Leenhardt et al, 2004a). This trend has been reported in many other studies (Chow et al, 2003;Colonna et al, 2007;Scheiden et al, 2006;Verkooijen et al, 2003). The improvement in diagnostic tools (image procedures and fineneedle aspiration biopsy) (Colonna et al, 2007;Scheiden et al, 2006) and greater extensiveness and number of thyroidectomies performed, which makes it easier to detect MPTCs (Leenhardt et al, 2004a), has been suspected to be of etiological importance in the observed increase of papillary thyroid cancer.…”

“…In our hospital, the rate of LR failure has decreased gradually in the recent three decades from 41.7 to 22.9%, and then to 7.4% (Chow et al 2003). This improvement might be related to diagnosis at an earlier stage and a higher rate of bilateral surgery, RAI ablation, and EXT.…”

“…14 Further subdivision of tumors by size (Յ 5 mm vs. Ͼ 5 mm) was suggested by Kasai and Sakamoto because of the lower frequency of LN metastasis and extrathyroid extension in the subgroup of patients with smaller tumors. 19 Studies in our hospital 21 and in Japan 22 revealed a temporal trend toward decreasing tumor size of PTC. With advances in ultrasonography and fine-needle aspiration biopsies, especially in mass screening programs, PMC can be diagnosed before surgery.…”
