Changes in climatic patterns and tourism and their concomitant effect on drinking water transfers into the region of South Aegean, Greece

Abstract: Global warming is already having a negative impact on vital sectors on which human development depends, such as water resource availability. In this study, the changes and abrupt change timing of climatic extreme indices, aridity and drought over the Region of South Aegean are captured using the Mann–Kendall and Pettitt tests, while the latter variables are correlated with the water volume transported by ships to the region as well as the relevant costs. The region's climate is shifting to warmer conditions wi… Show more

“…The SPI calculation method is as follows; the monthly precipitation is fitted to gamma distribution. The probability density function of Gamma distribution is defined as We adopted the Normal ratio method to estimate the missing rainfall values of the climate data set from three nearby weather stations [21]. Furthermore, the data selection criterion was based on the length, completeness, and reliability of the time series records of the stations as much as possible.…”

“…The issue of climate change presents broad implications to the entire planet and, unfortunately, it is expected to worsen in the future. The effects of climate change on global water resources have been thoroughly studied by a number of scientists all over the globe [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. If the goal is to create the conditions for adaptation and also mitigation of climate change effects, it is crucial to focus research efforts on respective studies, investigating the trends of precipitation and temperature.…”

“…Droughts must be accurately assessed to effectively plan and manage the environment, water resources, and ecosystems [15]. In recent decades, the application of drought indices has been a major concern for both scholars and scientists and a greater emphasis has been placed on to understand drought phenomenon and to analyze the characteristics of drought [16][17][18][19]. Considerable effort has been expended on developing reliable and effective statistical drought prediction models through the development of new or improved methods and the selection of indicators [20][21][22][23].…”
