Abstract:Background and Goal of Study: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with a transition of pulsatile to non-pulsatile flow generated by the heart-lung machine. Non-pulsatile flow may deteriorate postoperative organ perfusion, but this has only scarcely been investigated on a microcirculatory level. We therefore hypothesized that non-pulsatile flow negatively influences microcirculatory perfusion in cardiac surgery, and this is prevented by pulsatile flow during ex tracorporeal circulation. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
