Changes and patterns in biologically relevant temperatures in Europe 1941–2000

Abstract: We took daily near-surface air temperature data from across Europe to calculate a series of 12 biologically relevant temperature summaries. Mean values for two 30 yr periods, 1941-1970 and 1971-2000, were compared and rates of change calculated for those meteorological stations with sufficient data. We generated contour maps for these temperature summaries for both 30 yr periods and for the difference between them; we believe these are the first such maps for over a century. Change was most pronounced and mos… Show more

“…The ECM species are largely dependent on carbohydrate supply from their hosts for mycelial growth and fruit-body production, and ECM fungi may receive cues for fruiting from their host. Because the growth period of host trees has extended considerably during the investigation period (16), carbohydrate supply to the fungus now continues longer. Hence, triggers for fungal fruiting from the host act later and fruiting can also continue longer, the latter further aided by later hard frosts and snow (Fig.…”

“…increased mortality at the wintering quarters. However, in the latter study other cavity‐nesters, particularly blue tits, increased over the study period (probably as a consequence of increased winter survival due to increasing winter temperatures (Sparks et al )), and there was a strong negative correlation between the proportions of flycatchers and of other cavity‐nesters in the nest box area (Spearman rank correlation, rs = – 0.80, p < 0.001). Furthermore, in natural environments all these species are cavity limited (Alerstam ), indicating a more intense competition over time with increasing tit densities.…”

“…The degree of change in spring temperature varies both temporally and regionally (Ahola et al , Both et al , Fontaine et al , Karlsen et al , Sparks et al ). Thus, while April temperatures have increased over much of northern Europe during the last three to four decades, May temperatures have done so to a lesser extent (Fontaine et al ).…”

“…It is a sensitive region to climate change [12,13], and has been regarded as an ideal place to study the impact of climate change on environment [14][15][16][17]. Since 1999, "the Western Regions Development Strategy" has been implemented by the Chinese government.…”
