Change in Maternal Stress for Families in Treatment for their Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Abstract: Our objective was to predict change in maternal stress over the course of a randomized clinical trial comparing the efficacy of two interventions for Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): Parent Management Training and Collaborative & Proactive Solutions. In a secondary analysis of data collected from this randomized clinical trial, we examined whether children’s self-reported positive relations with their parents impacted responsiveness to treatment, which in turn impacted maternal stress. “…To our knowledge, very few studies have reported on the selfreported rates of symptoms of clinical concern for other mental health difficulties in adolescents during COVID-19, such as conduct disorder (CD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), separation anxiety, or social phobia. Symptoms of externalizing problems, such as CD, ODD, and ADHD, have been found to be highly associated with environmental influences such as maltreatment at home and poor relationships with parents (Booker et al, 2018;Craig et al, 2020Craig et al, , 2021. With the stay-at-home orders putting additional pressures on youth, it is possible that these behavior problems may be exacerbated and increases in symptoms may occur.…”

“…There were similarities between grandparents and parents in terms of PCGA types, with the highest proportion being neglect types. This similarity between the two generations may be because the current generation's rearing attitudes have implicit and explicit attributes that directly affect the next generation's attitudes through explicit rearing behaviors and indirectly affect them through subtle in uences [54].…”

“…Early childhood behavioral problems have been consistently associated with higher levels of parenting stress (e.g., Barroso et al, 2018), and longitudinal studies indicate that the level of child's behavioral problems is a significant predictor of parenting stress for both mothers and fathers (e.g., Jones et al, 2014; Lecavalier et al, 2006). Studies that examined the effectiveness of PMT interventions have repeatedly shown that after such interventions, parents reported both a reduction in child's behavioral problems and lower parenting stress (e.g., Booker et al, 2018; Stattin et al, 2015).…”
