Change Factors and the Adaptability of Buildings

Abstract: The adaptability of buildings addresses the responses of buildings to the changing needs of owners/users and the demands of external factors, over their lifecycle. An understanding of these changes is therefore key to the creation of adaptable buildings. This paper reports research which was aimed at modelling building changes to better understand the challenges for their adaptability. An in-depth study of the changes in selected case studies was conducted to understand the nature, characteristics, and implica… Show more

“…Lignin likely has applications in polymeric and polyelectrolytes substances, as it can be significantly extended to produce larger monomers for incorporation into polymers. Current advances seek to optimize lignin reactivity to improve its usage in a diverse range of macro-molecules, such as carbon fiber, polymer alloy, polyurethane and filler [ 142 , 144 ]. Carbon fiber is extensively applied in different areas, such as athletics and the aeronautical business.…”

“…Designing buildings with adaptive capacity to respond to the different variables throughout their life span, therefore, becomes an insistent prerequisite for sustainability and circularity. The concept of Design for Adaptability (DfA) is considered as an important enabler to the circular building strategies [20][21][22], including design for disassembly/deconstruction (DfD) [21,23,24], design for longevity and durability [2], design for change (DfC) [25], and reversible building design [26,27], among others. DfA is the intentional design of buildings to be easily modified throughout their lifecycle in response to emerging needs and future circumstances [17,28].…”

“…The user's needs that a building or its parts should meet change over time [111]. In that sense, an important precondition for extending the useful life of a building and maintaining its value is its capacity to accommodate change [112].…”
