Background The Internet has become an established learning tool in dental education where students can access online videos on a range of dental subjects. However, finding reliable peer‐reviewed content is not straightforward. Aim To evaluate the video content offered by UK and Republic of Ireland (RoI) Dental Schools on their YouTube channels and public websites. Methods Free videos offered on UK and RoI Dental schools websites and YouTube channels were watched and set according to its purpose, as educational or non‐educational. The number of views, length, category and date of publication were analysed. Results A total of 627 videos offered by dental courses were evaluated. Videos were available on 83% of the websites, but only 9% was educational content. Dental courses YouTube channels received more than 2.3 million views, but less than 5% of the material offered is educational. Instructional videos found on the websites (3.2 min) were shorter than those found on YouTube (8.5 min) (P = .03). The majority of the videos, provided by Universities, were not educational and focused on promoting the dental courses. Most websites have demonstrated a password‐protected area where quality content may be offered. Conclusion Students wishing to watch instructional videos will find limited educational content provided by UK and RoI dental courses. Therefore, they are likely to access course‐related material elsewhere on the Internet that may not be necessarily peer‐reviewed.

Background. You Tube is one of the most commonly used online sources for sharing information and knowledge. Academic topics or clinical data shared on this platform is not peer reviewed or evaluated by subject specialists for accuracy. No study was found in the literature examining the validity of crown preparation videos available at this platform. Objective. To evaluate the authenticity of the content and quality of the crown preparation videos uploaded on the YouTube. Methods. The systematic search for YouTube videos was carried out over a period of one year from January 2020 until February 2021. The keywords or phrases and tags used were crown preparation, PFM crown preparation, all ceramic crown preparation, and dental crown preparation. The videos were shortlisted on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria to select educationally useful videos in terms of content and quality. Results. Three subject specialists evaluated the videos on crown preparation three times to shortlist only 12 (11%) educationally useful videos out of 109 relevant videos. These 12 videos met the preset inclusion criteria. Conclusion. Although YouTube is the most popular social media platform used as the source of information by the students, the majority of uploaded content lacks authenticity. This study found that crown preparation videos uploaded by the faculty members or subject specialists can be considered as the reliable source.

Introducing dental students to complete denture treatment in times of COVID‐19: Students’ responses

Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic required changes in the complete denture courses to comply with lock-in and social distancing requirements. The objectives were to assess (a) dental students' interest in a required complete denture course and the prosthodontics specialty, (b) how much time students spent on studying background, lab, and clinical content, and (c) how difficult and helpful course components were. Additionally, open-ended responses concerning what the students liked and what they wanted to have changed were analyzed as well. Methods: After this "complete denture" course, 81 of 109 students responded to a web-based survey with questions about course content and design. This hybrid course consisted of weekly asynchronous virtual lectures, in-person simulated laboratory (sim lab) exercises, and synchronous virtual workshops.Results: Exactly 53.7% were much/very much interested in this course, with nobody considering prosthodontics as their specialty. The students studied on average of 79.61 minutes for 1 hour (of background-related lecture, 69.92 minutes for a lab-based lecture, and 77.00 minutes for a clinical-content lecture (p < 0.001). They evaluated clinical content as most difficult, lab content as less difficult, and background material as least difficult (3-point scale with 1 = not at all difficult: means = 1.90/1.85/1.80; p < 0.001). They rated background lectures as least helpful, clinical material as more helpful, and lab content as most helpful (5-point scale with 1 = most helpful: means = 2.33/2.67/2.96; p < 0.001). Open-ended answers showed exceptionally positive responses for content and pedagogy of sim lab and clinical content.Conclusions: Gaining a better understanding of students' responses to hybrid "complete denture" courses is critical for optimally teaching this material in times of COVID-19.
