Challenges for achieving sustainable flood risk management

Abstract: This paper presents the challenges for effectiveness and sustainability of flood risk management strategies and technologies by critically reviewing flood management practices. The study reveals that reliable flood prediction is limited by the characterisation of floods that have multiple causes and hydrological uncertainties due to variability in climate and river morphology. Moreover, changing land use in floodplains and the potential of creating new risks limit the risk assessment and evaluation process of … Show more

“…Recent literature has been concerned with the relations between the economical or technical purposes and the environmental effects. An example of very general approach might be the paper by Shah et al [51], who tested flood risk strategies and assessed them taking into account effectiveness and sustainability. Another interesting work is that by Alho and Silva [52], concerned with the impact of seasonal flooding on animals living in the wetlands.…”

“…These kinds of signs consisted of colors, smell and mountain behavior. These practices are being exercised with great precision (Shah et al, 2015). For instance, more than one hundred houses were destroyed due to glacial lake flood in village Brep but there was no loss of life as they accurately interpreted the signs and village was evacuated timely.…”

“…Monitoring of only the flood mitigation structures is usually continued over the years, without looking into other environmental and socio-economic aspects of the project area. Long term environmental, social, and economic aspects related to sustainable development in the project area and region are not adequately addressed in the planning process (Environment Agency, 2010;BWDB, 2014;DNRM, 2014;Shah et al, 2015).…”
