Background The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified viral hepatitis, caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), as one of the main global public health issues. People who work in the collection of waste materials, from either household or medical environments, are at greatest risk. Objective To determine the prevalence of and factors associated with HBV and HCV among medical and domestic waste handlers in Northeast Ethiopia. Methods A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2021 at selected healthcare facilities and municipal settings in Dessie town, Northeast Ethiopia. The sample size was determined using a double population proportion formula, and a simple random sampling technique was employed to select 70 individuals in the medical waste handlers (MWHs) group and 206 in the domestic waste handlers (DWHs) group. Five milliliters of venous blood was collected from each participant and tested for HBV and HCV using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23; the prevalence was computed, Fisher’s exact test was used, and logistic regression was applied. Results A total of 276 study participants were enrolled and the overall seroprevalence of hepatitis virus was 5.1%. The seroprevalence of HBV infection among MWHs and DWHs was 8.6% and 1.9%, respectively. The overall seroprevalence of HCV infections among MWHs and DWHs was 4.3% and 0.5%, respectively. Medical waste handling, having a history of needle stick injury, and not using personal protective equipment were factors significantly associated with HBV infection. Conclusion The overall seroprevalence of viral hepatitis was high. The prevalence of HBV infection among MWHs was in line with the high endemicity classification of the WHO, and there was a significant difference in prevalence between DWHs and MWHs. Both groups of waste handlers should receive proper attention to protect them from HBV and HCV infection.

Objetivo: descrever o risco biológico relacionado ao manejo de resíduos de serviços de saúde na atenção domiciliar. Métodos: estudo transversal descritivo que observou 231 visitas domiciliares. As visitas foram realizadas por 15 profissionais de enfermagem de um serviço municipal de atenção domiciliar. Resultados: durante as visitas domiciliares foram gerados Resíduos de Serviços de Saúde, sendo 49,5% do grupo A, 35,0% do D e 15,5% do E. Observou-se não conformidades no acondicionamento dos Resíduos do Grupo A e E. Os resíduos do grupo E foram descartados em recipientes rígidos em 83,9% das visitas, porém em 37,5% das visitas foram descartados em recipientes rígidos próprios para essa finalidade. Conclusão: durante as visitas domiciliares foram gerados resíduos de serviços de saúde, do grupo A, D e E. No descarte e manejo do grupo A e D, observou-se que não foram acondicionados em sacos plásticos apropriados; no grupo E, foram descartados em recipiente rígido.

From an under-resourced community level perspective, it would be more helpful if Home and Community Based Care Givers are professionally trained, (Zikhathile & Atagana, 2018), to provide emotional support to the widows and refer those that have complicated psychological problems to highly trained psychologists. Again it would be beneficial if mobile psychological services could be provided to the widows in these under-resourced communities as these services are mainly accessible in major cities where widows cannot access them.…”

The perpetual growth in the population of widows globally signals the need for systematic research and interrogation of the phenomenon of widowhood. Under-resourced communities have been side-lined from imperative investigations and systematic documentation to inform practice. This article discusses the risks associated with widowhood in under-resourced communities of Binga District in Zimbabwe. Following a qualitative research approach and a phenomenological research design, purposive sampling was employed to engage ten widows in one-on-one in-depth interviews. Data were analysed thematically and backed up by existing literature to provide thick descriptions. The findings of the study indicated that widows were exposed to an arsenal of health, psychological, social and economic risks. Many of the risks associated with widowhood are exacerbated by lack of supportive environments and provision of conducive environment to trigger proper adaptation mechanism especially among the young widows in under-resourced communities. The conclusions reached were that widowhood risk factors continue to increase among widows in under-resourced communities impacting negatively on optimal living and adaptation with the widows’ circumstances.
