Challenges associated with ceftriaxone resistance inSalmonella

Abstract: Salmonella is the leading cause of typhoidal and non-typhoidal infections in the world. The entry of Salmonella into the bloodstream causes an invasive disease state, resulting to high morbidity and mortality rates, especially in children. Owing to the misuse of antibiotics, certain Salmonella serovars are multi-drug resistant and do not respond to traditional antibiotics, such as ampicillin and trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole, presenting a significant challenge for healthcare practitioners in treating and cont… Show more

“…Mechanisms of Salmonella resistance are controlled via the expression regulation of the genes encoding proteins related to drug transport [ 73 , 75 , 76 , 77 ]. The first line of pathogen defense involves membrane resistance based on limited influx through porins of the external membrane and on increased export by membrane transporters [ 78 , 79 ].…”

“…It is a greatly effective antibacterial with high potency covering wide variety of gram‐negative and gram‐positive specious and has been extensively prescribed in healthcare facilities including for empirical treatment. 2 Twenty‐five years back, a study was conducted to investigate the incidence of bacterial species and their susceptibilities to ceftriaxone and other ꞵ‐lactams from patients with community‐acquired infections. The report indicated that all bacterial strains resistant to other antibiotics were found to be fully susceptible to ceftriaxone.…”

“…Globally, Salmonella is considered a primary cause of foodborne illnesses, such as typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, and food poisoning. Salmonellosis is a major cause of gastroenteritis in both developed and developing countries, which leads to high morbidity and economic burden (Yoshida et al, 2014; Al kraiem et al, 2018).…”

“…Indica . Based on phenotypic and genotypic studies (Achtman et al, 2012; Issenhuth-Jeanjean et al, 2014; Smith et al, 2016), Salmonella is categorized into typhoidal and non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) (Marzel et al, 2016), with the latter estimated to cause 93.8 million cases of gastroenteritis and 155,000 mortalities worldwide (Yoshida et al, 2014; Al kraiem et al, 2018).…”
