Show more

“…In both rural and urban areas, these animals frequently visit houses in search for food, establishing close contact with humans [14, 17, 35]. These animals have been implicated in outbreaks resulting from oral transmission in different areas including in Colombia, suggesting they are able to contaminate human food sources via anal secretions [3638]. The high pooled prevalence found for this species in our study and the already documented tolerance to TcI infection (the same DTU identified in human cases from oral transmission) confirms opossum as the most important species so far identified for transmission to humans in the sylvatic cycle of T. cruzi [4, 39, 40].…”

“…The situation in 2018 was similar to 2017, while in 2019, 50.9% of acute CD cases in the country came from Casanare (19). This department has reported outbreaks of oral transmission with the lethality of up to 50% and outbreaks associated with occupational exposure with a significant number of cases (20,21). Currently, Colombia has a program to interrupt the domiciliary vector transmission of T. cruzi by Rhodnius prolixus, which means that oral transmission may increase and, with this, the presence of acute cases (22,23).…”

“…cruzi infections in different age groups, suggest that the greatest trouble is related to adults where about 3% (95% CI, 1.0–5.0) is infected with the parasite [15, 16]. This position suggests the need to include an adult serological screening that allows both the identification of asymptomatic patients who acquired the infection before consolidation of the National Transmission Interruption Program, as well as, cases that can be acquired during operational activities in areas with presence of vectors [10, 20, 25]. The identification of these cases could provide to the prevention of cardiac failures belong to the chronic phase, throughout chemotherapeutic management.…”

“…prolixus , are commonly indicators analyzed [6, 17]. In contrast, few studies have been executed in adult population and its focus has been on searching for infection in pregnant women, surveillance in blood banks and researching in outbreaks linked with oral transmission [1820]. Even though in Colombia there have not been assessed the dimension of infections in adults that lived during their first years of life in municipalities with T .…”
