“…This decrease may be related to several factors that have been discussed in detail in the literature (Jacobs et al, 2000b;Castle et al, 2006). The observed relationship between hrHPV prevalence and age is in agreement with data from several European and North American studies (Jacobs et al, 2000a;Sellors et al, 2000;de Sanjose et al, 2003;Castle et al, 2005;Ronco et al, 2005;Manhart et al, 2006). In our large data set, we did not find a second hrHPV peak at age beyond 45 years as detected in several Latin American countries (Franceschi et al, 2006).…”

“…The prevalence of HPV infection (12.4%) among control women in Algiers was intermediate, between the low prevalence found in some age groups in some parts of Spain 14 and Asia 15 and the high prevalence found in sub-Saharan Africa 16 and Latin America. 17 These differences in the prevalence of HPV in cancerfree women are consistent with the wide variations observed in CC incidence rates (e.g., 2-to 4-fold greater rates in sub-Saharan Africa than in Algeria 1 ).…”

“…The prevalence of HPV among 878 women aged 20-49 years with normal cervical smears who were sampled randomly from general practice lists in Ontario, Canada, was 13%, with a peak of 24% among those aged 20-24 years [7]. Much lower HPV prevalence was observed in other southern European countries, like Spain (3%) [15] and Greece (2.5%) [14]. Community-based surveys on continents other than Europe and North America have shown a broad range of prevalence, from 2% in Hanoi, Vietnam [10], to 26% in Ibadan, Nigeria [13], among women aged 15-74 years.…”

“…Few such studies have been conducted [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13], particularly in Southern Europe [14,15], and no large population-based survey of the prevalence of type-specific HPV is available for Italy.…”
