Cervical human papillomavirus infection in women attending gynaecological outpatient clinics in northern Greece

Abstract: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the necessary cause for the development of invasive cervical cancer. Identification of HPV determinants may contribute to the targeting of high-risk groups for cervical cancer. The study was aimed at estimating HPV prevalence and its determinants among 1296 women attending six gynaecological outpatient clinics in northern Greece. Information was available through personal interview and the study of cervical exfoliated cells. HPV DNA was detected by reverse line-blot polymerase cha… Show more

“…Cette prévalence élevée est comparable à la moyenne rencontrée en Afrique qui est de 26 % [8] contre 8 % en Asie. Comme le souligne certains auteurs, cette prévalence est inversement proportionnelle à l'âge de la patiente [9][10][11][12][13]. Cette distribution a été retrouvée dans notre série avec une prévalence de 59 % avant 30 ans à une prévalence de 5,5 % au-delà de 50 ans.…”

“…The prevalence of HPV among 878 women aged 20-49 years with normal cervical smears who were sampled randomly from general practice lists in Ontario, Canada, was 13%, with a peak of 24% among those aged 20-24 years [7]. Much lower HPV prevalence was observed in other southern European countries, like Spain (3%) [15] and Greece (2.5%) [14]. Community-based surveys on continents other than Europe and North America have shown a broad range of prevalence, from 2% in Hanoi, Vietnam [10], to 26% in Ibadan, Nigeria [13], among women aged 15-74 years.…”
