Cerebral tumors: Specific features in children

Abstract: Brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer in children. Primary tumors predominate and are of very varied histological types. Their prognosis and treatment depend on the histological type and grade. The diagnostic approach to these includes analysis of the site of the lesion and appearances on computed tomography and MR, and taking account of the age and clinical features of the child. CT is used to diagnose the tumor in an emergency situation. Conventional MR provides a morphological approach and all… Show more

“…While our study was not able to identify the actual chemicals used by mothers, it is likely that these could include organophosphate or pyrethroid insecticides, which are widely used in residential areas . Fetuses and young children may be especially vulnerable to these insecticides because of their immature nervous systems and their rapid dividing cells . Nevertheless, we could not find any evidence in the literature of pyrethroids passing through the placental barrier.…”

“…Although the finding above is supported by another report from our sub region [4], it differed from reports from other regions in our country [1,23,30] as well as previous studies in other parts of the world [4,11,33]. This may suggest some geographical variability in the topographical distribution of brain tumors which has been reported by some authors to be influenced by age [3,15]. Craniopharyngioma (n = 21) is the most common tumor among histopathologically confirmed cases in our series followed by medulloblastoma TABLE 2.…”

“…The pre-operative images obtained using these techniques correlated well with the pathological findings for those infants who underwent surgical tumor resection. Thus, ultrasound imaging combined with the use of enhanced CT and MRI may facilitate a correct diagnosis of the intracranial location of the majority of common brain tumors, greatly improving the accuracy of the diagnosis (30,31). …”
