Cercarial chaetotaxy of Codonocephalus urniger (Rudolphi, 1819) (Trematoda: Diplostomidae)

Abstract: The chaetotaxy of Codonocephalus urniger (Rudolphi, 1819) cercariae recovered from Lymnaea palustris in a brackish water lake in Bulgaria is described and figured. Comparisons with Diplostomum spathaceum (Rudolphi, 1819) and D. pseudospathaceum Niewiadomska, 1984 cercariae indicate a similar general pattern in the distribution of sensilla but with marked differences in their number and arrangement on the ventral sucker, tail stem and furcae. Data on the chaetotaxy of other diplostomid species are used to revea… Show more

“…The total number of nuclei in the tail is 34.4±0.2 (N=10). n, nucleus; nc, nerve cord; arrow, 5HT-IR neurones, arrow head, α-tubulin-IR processes conformity with that of sensory receptors described by another authors (Stenko 1985;Kostadinova 1993;Bell et al 1997;Abdul-Salam and Sreelatha 2004). Immunostaining (IS) with anti-α-tubulin has the advantage that it can be combined with other IS techniques, thereby enabling comparisons between the sensory receptors and the general NMS.…”

“…The distribution of ventral sucker sensilla (4S 1 + 6S 2 = 10) recorded for most Cotylurus (Szidat 1928) and all Ichthyocotylurus spp. is not even unique to these closely related genera, also being reported by Kostadinova (1993) for the diplostomid Codonocephalus urniger (Rudolphi, 1819).…”

“…weakens that author's proposal that the main difference in cercarial chaetotaxy between the Diplostomidae and Strigeidae is the position of the lateral sensilla on the tail stem. Kostadinova (1993) noted the lack of complete chaetotaxy descriptions of strigeid cercariae and commented on the variability of lateral tail stem sensilla within this family, resulting in its unsuitability as a character for differentiation at this level. There does, however, appear to be some taxonomic value to this feature at the subgeneric/generic level, since Apatemon (Apatemon) spp.…”

“…Particularly in Iran, C. codonocephalus has been recorded parasitizing P. ridibundus in the northeast and in the southwest (Mashaii, 1999, 2005; Mashaii et al, 2000). The life cycle of this species involves the snail Stagnicola palustris Müller, 1774 as first intermediate host, marsh frogs as second intermediate hosts and ardeiform birds as definitive hosts (Kostadinova, 1993; Niewiadomska, 1964; Prudhoe & Bray, 1982).…”
