European Phyllodistomum (Digenea, Gorgoderidae) and phylogenetic affinities of Cercaria duplicata based on rDNA and karyotypes. 44,[191][192][193][194][195][196][197][198][199][200][201][202] Genetic markers of some European Gorgoderidae species, including potential adults of Cercaria duplicata, were obtained and used to clarify phylogenetic affinities within the genus Phyllodistomum and to verify conflicting data existing on their life cycles. Molecular data and karyotype, 2n = 18, provide further support for ascription of C. duplicata to the Gorgoderinae. Sequences of C. duplicata form a robustly supported major clade, phylogenetically distinct from other known gorgoderid species in both ITS2-and 28S-based phylogenetic trees. The molecular data revealed no match between C. duplicata and any species of Phyllodistomum, including adults found in the experimental studies. One of them, P. elongatum, showed no differences from type species P. folium. Other, P. angulatum, forms a robustly supported clade, which is closely related to P. macrocotyle clade in all phylogenetic trees. This study supports the concept that only P. macrocotyle is a parasite of Dreissena polymorpha among the phyllodistomes and life cycle described for the type species P. folium by Sinitsin (1905) can apparently be discounted. Previously reported low host specificity of P. folium was justified. Adults of P. folium were detected in eight teleost species from five families and four orders. Cystocercous cercariae of P. folium were recorded in sphaeriid bivalves of the genus Sphaerium and Pisidium. According to our molecular data, P. simile, parasite of bullhead, must be regarded as synonym of P. folium. Phyllodistomum umblae is most closely related to P. folium in the all phylogenetic analyses. Molecular phylogenies support a presumption that Phyllodistomum species with cystocercous cercariae developing in sphaeriid bivalves should be regarded as Phyllodistomum sensu stricto. The results reveal a clear need for reconsideration of the knowledge on gorgoderid life cycles based on experimental studies and re-evaluation of the validity of some nominal Phyllodistomum species. SUMMARY Brown trout (Salmo trutta L.), salmon parr (Salmo salar, L.) and the eels (Anguilla anguilla (L.)) from certain rivers in West Wales were examined over a period of nearly two years for parasites. Large numbers of Phyllodistomum simile Nybelin were found in the urinary bladder of the trout from the River Teify. P. simile, was not found in any of the 274 salmon parr or 243 eels examined, probably due to an ecological immunity in the former and a physiological immunity in the latter. There was no evidence of a seasonal variation in the occurrence of P. simile in trout aged two years or more. Trout aged four or more years were more heavily infested than young trout and there was no indication of the development of a total immunity with increase in the age of fishes. The life history of P. simile was elucidated under experimental conditions by feeding the trout precocious metacercariae present in daughter sporocysts obtained from the gill lamellae and epibranchial cavity of the freshwater bi‐valve, Sphaerium corneum. The anatomy of the daughter sporocyst, the cercaria, metacercaria and the adult stages are described. The gorgoderid cercariae and the attempts to classify them into groups corresponding to those of the adults are discussed. It is suggested that attempts at discussing the evolution of the cercariae placed in the family Gorgoderidae may be premature in view of the fact that life histories have only been elucidated experimentally for cercariae of the macrocercous, cystocercous kind. The advantages in the life cycle of precocious encystment within the sporocyst are commented upon but it is also suggested that P. simile may have a second intermediate host, possibly the minnow, Pkoxinus phoxinus L. or a freshwater arthropod. The morphological changes that take place during the development of P. simile and their importance in specific diagnosis are discussed. It is suggested that in view of the more readily discernible differences between the larvae, certain larval features might well be used in distinguishing species of doubtful validity.

Phylogenetic relationships of the Gorgoderidae (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda), including the proposal of a new subfamily (Degeneriinae n. subfam.)

Phylogenetic analyses of a range of gorgoderid trematodes based on ITS2 and partial 28S rDNA data lead us to propose the Degeneriinae n. subfam. for the genus Degeneria in recognition of its phylogenetic isolation and distinctive morphology and biology. The current concepts of the subfamilies Anaporrhutinae and Gorgoderinae were supported. Within the Gorgoderinae, the large genus Phyllodistomum is shown to be paraphyletic relative to Pseudophyllodistomum and Xystretrum. Notably, the clade of marine Phyllodistomum does not form a clade with the other marine genus, Xystretrum. Distinct clades within the Gorgoderinae correspond variously to identity of first intermediate host, form of cercaria and their marine or freshwater habitat. We are not yet in a position to propose separate genera for these clades.
