Centralized-Light-Source Two-Way PAM8/PAM4 FSO Communications With Parallel Optical Injection Locking Operation

Abstract: For the first time up to our knowledge, a centralized-light-source two-way eight-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM8)/four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) free-space optical (FSO) communication with parallel optical injection-locked vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) transmitter is practically demonstrated. With the assistance of parallel optical injection locking, injection locking in the polarization sideband causes a simultaneous generation of the free-running orthogonal polarization … Show more

“…Our previous study demonstrated a centralized-lightsource two-way PAM8/PAM4 FSO communication based on parallel optical injection locking technique [15]. However, the free-space transmission rate of 84 Gb/s (downstream)/45 Gb/s (upstream) and the free-space transmission distance of 200 m are considerably lower than those of 448 Gb/s and 600 m adopted in this demonstrated FSO communication.…”

“…In addition, it is to be found that the injection-locked VCSEL1’s peak power is enhanced and the injection-locked VCSEL1’s linewidth is suppressed. An injection-locked technique enhances the intensity and suppresses the linewidth of the injection-locked laser 25 , 26 . Four directly modulated DFB LDs could be used to replace four VCSELs with injection locking.…”

“…4(a) by reason of more 30 m free-space transmission. Over 30 m freespace transmission, the performances are somewhat degraded because other lights from the surroundings are involved in the received lights as well [30]. Additionally, to have a direct connection with LPFs, BPF, HPF and the electrical spectrum, the electrical spectrum of the hybrid data signals without employing LPFs, BPF, and HPF for the scenario over 41.44 km fiber link is displayed in Fig.…”
