Centralization impact and cost-saving study in a Moroccan hospital’s centralized unit of chemotherapy preparation

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the cost saved and the amount of drug wasted when compounding anticancer drugs in the centralized unit for chemotherapy preparation. A secondary objective was to estimate the centralization impact of activities related to the preparation of chemotherapies. Methods This was a two-month, single-centre, prospective study conducted at the National Oncology Institute in Rabat. The cost saved and the amount of drug wasted were calculated using a standardized data colle… Show more

“…11 The more the number of cancer patients increases the more the quantity of chemotherapy compounding increases and the risk of error increases. 12,13 To deal with this situation, the National Institute of Oncology in Rabat (NIO) after centralizing the chemotherapy production process at the centralized chemotherapy production unit (CCPU) of the pharmacy in 2012 14 and computerizing the process introduced an automated drug dispensing system (ADS) in December 2019. Many studies were interested in the contribution of centralization and computerization in the risk minimization of chemotherapy production process.…”

“…This study assessed the practice of centralization and did not take into account the possibility of extending the microbiological stability of anticancer drugs. 15 The amount of drugs wasted accounted for an enormous burden on the annual drug budget. This situation demanded for ways to minimize anticancer drug waste in order to optimize the use of resources.…”

“…As a leader in its disciplines, NIO has a pharmacy with a Central Chemotherapy Preparation Unit (CCPU). This unit guaranteed adequate conditions for storage and preparation of cytotoxic molecules, 9 according to good manufacturing practices and French hospital preparation standards, 10 as it has been shown providing economic and therapeutic benefits. 11,12…”

This unit guaranteed adequate conditions for storage and preparation of cytotoxic molecules, 9 according to good manufacturing practices and French hospital preparation standards, 10 as it has been shown providing economic and therapeutic benefits. 11,12 The huge costs of chemotherapy, 13 improving patient safety and better medication management process motivated NIO to invest in ADS technology as known to generate cost benefit, 14 improving safety and medical management process.…”
