Cellulose acetate butyrate nanocomposites synthesized via sol-gel method

Abstract: Cellulose acetate butyrate nanocomposites synthesized via sol-gel method Summary -Novel hybrid nanocomposites were synthesized from modified cellulose acetate butyrate (MCAB) via sol-gel reaction at ambient temperature. The inorganic phase was introduced in situ by hydrolysis-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in different concentrations, using an acid catalyst, in the presence of organic polymer dissolved in acetone. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) was used to monitor modification of CAB and nanocomposites c… Show more

“…Figure 7 c–e also show a strong peak between 1070 and 1075 cm −1 , which can be attributed to the ν δ (C-O-C) stretching band found in the pristine CA1 membrane or to the ν δ (Si-O-Si) stretching vibration [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]. Since the percentages attributed to this second peak (25–33%) are very close to the percentage of the pristine membrane (33%), it is envisioned that this contribution is due to the C-O-C groups of cellulose acetate rather than Si-O-Si groups.…”

“…Figure 6 shows the curve-fitting decomposition of the region between 1000 and 1110 cm −1 for the CA/SiO 2 /TiO 2 membranes, and Table 5 shows the values of the wavelength and relative peak areas. The peak centered at 1039 cm −1 corresponds to the symmetric COC vibrations of the acetate group (ν s COC (acetate)) [ 39 , 40 ], and the peak centered at 1067 cm −1 corresponds to ν a SiOSi [ 41 , 42 , 44 , 45 , 46 ]. This indicates the formation of a Si–O–Si network, probably in nano/micro-clusters dispersed throughout the polymer matrix [ 24 ].…”
