“…Symptomatic relief via cold water hydrotherapy has been documented in human and equine literature (Adam and Southwood 2007; Fjordbakk et al . 2008; Bailey and Kroshinsky 2011; Adam 2019), and the findings of this study demonstrate that the majority of veterinary surgeons recommend cold water hydrotherapy via cold hosing. Cryotherapy (via ice bathing) may reduce enzymatic activity and bacterial protein synthesis as well as reducing inflammation in laminitis cases (Dern et al .…”

“…Literature suggests that a 5-day course of broad-spectrum antimicrobials is sufficient for most cellulitis cases in humans (Gabillot-Carr e and Roujeau 2007; Bailey and Kroshinsky 2011;Hirschmann and Raugi 2012;Raff and Kroshinsky 2016) and results of the current study indicate that this is also the case in horses. Cryotherapy (via ice bathing) may reduce enzymatic activity and bacterial protein synthesis as well as reducing inflammation in laminitis cases (Dern et al 2018;Adam 2019) and may be a suitable management recommendation for cellulitis, although application of ice may be impractical when compared with cold water hydrotherapy.…”
