Cell Surface Molecules in Basal Cell Carcinomas

Abstract: The expression of integrins by BCCs by binding to the surrounding stroma may limit BCC's growth; however, their expression does not appear to correlate with their histological pattern.

“…Many human tumours such as lung, breast, gastric, colon, pancreas, renal and prostate carcinomas have been shown to express different integrin heterodimers [4,14,21,39,64,65,82,84,85,105,107,160,161]. Upon fixation of an integrin to its extracellular ligand the ensuing signalling cascade can affect cell migration [24,30,31,73,78,104,128].…”

“…BCCs manifest a keratin profile similar to that of the lower part of the hair follicle 60 and that is therefore distinct from that of the adjacent epidermal basal layer epithelia. 60 In particular, and held to reflect their derivation from basaloid epithelia, BCCs express keratins type 5, 6 61 and 14 62 and also alpha 2 and beta 1 integrins 63 in a fashion that does not correlate well to tumor subtype. The expression of CD10 supports deriva- Figure 16 Recurrent BCC: histomorphology.…”

“…A clue to this poor immunodetection (surveillance) and deficient cell mediated immune response may reside in the observation that BCC epithelial cells are deficient in cell surface receptors (ICAM‐1 and LAF‐3) that bind to appropriately activated lymphocytes. This binding step is required for lymphocyte‐associated immune reactions and tumor cell destruction to occur 8,9 . Furthermore, it has been noted that BCC cells produce cytokines interleukin (IL)‐10 and IL‐4 that down regulate the immune response 10…”

“…This binding step is required for lymphocyte-associated immune reactions and tumor cell destruction to occur. 8,9 Furthermore, it has been noted that BCC cells produce cytokines interleukin (IL)-10 and IL-4 that down regulate the immune response. 10 However, the situation is dramatically altered if one examines the microscopic state of a spontaneously regressing BCC.…”
