Ce-loaded silica nanoparticles in the epoxy nanocomposite coating for anticorrosion protection of carbon steel

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to explore how the inhibitor-loaded nanocontainers can be used in the epoxy coating for protection of steel against corrosion. A self-healing anticorrosive coating can be easily fabricated by embedding the inhibitor-loaded nanocontainers into the epoxy coating matrices. For this purpose, first, cerium (a catholic corrosion inhibitor) is encapsulated into silica nanoparticles (SiO2@Ce). Thereafter, an epoxy nanocomposite coating has been prepared on steel substrate using these SiO2@Ce na… Show more

“…The R ct value was assigned to the coating/metal interfacial reaction to describe charge transfer resistance, a higher value indicates greater barrier integrity and lower corrosion rate. The decrease of R ct , indicates that the corrosion medium has reached the metal/coating interface, which leads to the delamination of the coating (Nguyen et al , 2022). Nevertheless, the build-up of corrosion products at the defect area leads R ct to rise (Mahidashti et al , 2018; Meng et al , 2021).…”

“…After 60 days, the Nyquist plot showed significant double capacitive arcs and the Bode phase angle plot presented two time constants. The appearance of the capacitive arc in the low-frequency phase suggests that corrosion has occurred, indicating that electrolyte has initiated electrochemical reaction at the substrate interface (Nguyen et al , 2022). The chemical bond between the coatings and the substrate has been reduced or broken, resulting in a reduction in the protective effect of the coating.…”

“…In fitting software, Q stands for CPE in EEC code. CPE has been used widely for fitting EIS data of coated metals in NaCl solution (Xia et al , 2022; Pan et al , 2020; Nguyen et al , 2022). As shown in Table 4, the C dl value of our ZnNi sample was 0.28 mF.cm −2 in NaCl solution.…”
