Abstract-We report the electron and hole charge transport properties of semi insulating CdTe:Cl grown by the Travelling Heater Method (THM). An alpha-particle Time of Flight (TOF) method was used to measure electron and hole drift mobility, with room temperature values of 880 cm 2 /Vs for electrons and 90 cm 2 /Vs for holes. The variation in mobility was also investigated as a function of temperature, with electron and hole mobilities at 190 K of 1150 cm 2 /Vs and 20 cm 2 /Vs respectively. Using a Hecht analysis the electron and hole mobility-lifetime products were also measured over the same temperature range, with values at room temperature of 8 10 4 cm 2 /V and 7 10 5 cm 2 /V respectively. Time-resolved ion beam induced charge (IBIC) imaging was used to produce micrometer resolution maps of electron drift mobility and signal amplitude, which showed excellent spatial uniformity.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) have been regarded as promising semiconductor materials for hard X-ray and γ-ray detection. The high atomic number of the materials (Z Cd =48, Z T e =52) gives a high quantum efficiency in comparison with Si. The large band-gap energy (Eg ∼ 1.5 eV) allows us to operate the detector at room temperature. However, a considerable amount of charge loss in these detectors produces a reduced energy resolution. This problem arises due to the low mobility and short lifetime of holes. Recently, significant improvements have been achieved to improve the spectral properties based on the advances in the production of crystals and in the design of electrodes. In this overview talk, we summarize (1) advantages and disadvantages of CdTe and CdZnTe semiconductor detectors and (2) technique for improving energy resolution and photopeak efficiencies. Applications of these imaging detectors in future hard X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy missions are briefly discussed.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a molecular imaging modality that provides information at the molecular level. This system is composed of radiation detectors to detect incoming coincident annihilation gamma photons emitted from the radiopharmaceutical injected into a patient's body and uses these data to reconstruct images. A major trend in PET instrumentation is the development of time-of-flight positron emission tomography (ToF-PET). In ToF-PET, the time information (the instant the radiation is detected) is incorporated for image reconstruction. Therefore, precise and accurate timing recording is crucial in ToF-PET. ToF-PET leads to better localization of the annihilation event and thus results in overall improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the reconstructed image. Several factors affect the timing performance of ToF-PET. In this article, the background, early research and recent advances in ToF-PET instrumentation are presented. Emphasis is placed on the various types of scintillators, photodetectors and electronic circuitry for use in ToF-PET, and their impact on timing resolution is discussed.
