“…It is believed that these stromal enzymes potentiate the action of MMPs produced by the parenchyma. This fact supports the view of an interaction between neoplastic cells and the adjacent stroma as demonstrated in some experiments (15,16). This strategic interaction permits neoplastic cells to induce stromal cells to produce proteolytic enzymes that act in synergism with tumor enzymes, Table 2 Immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9 and VEGF in metastatic and non-metastatic SCC of the tongue thus facilitating the processes of invasion, migration, and metastasis.…”

“…LDH was found to increase in the serum of various malignancies and has been identified as the main recurrent adverse prognostic factors (Schneider, 2006;Duffy and Crown, 2008;Culine, 2009). As for the demonstrated increase in MMP-9, it is worth noting that it was shown earlier to be elevated in saliva and that strong stromal MMP-9-staining intensity was correlated with poor tumour differentiation (Kosunen et al, 2007). MMP-9 are metalloproteases that have been shown to participate in cancer pathogenesis as they degrade type IV collagen, a major component of basement membrane, as well as other types of collagens (V, VII and X), elastin and fibronectin.…”

“…The nonparametric 2 test was used to test the representativeness of the present cohort (n=124) to the original patient group (n=239). 23 With continuous variables, the 1-sample t test was used. The nonparametric 2 test was used to compare the proportions of normal and reduced catenin expression in well-differentiated and moderately or poorly differentiated tumors and to evaluate the correlation between histologic grade and catenin expression and mutual expression of different catenins.…”

“…Clinicopathologic data were obtained from the previous study 23 of the same original patient group of 239 patients with OSCC treated at Kuopio University Hospital and Central Hospital of Central Finland, Jyväskylä, between January 1, 1979, and December 31,1998. This study included a retrospective cohort of 124 patients with OSCC and sufficient tumor material available for immunohistochemical analyses.…”
